In 1997, I first used poetry with people living with dementia at Marin Adult Day Care in Novato, California. Having grown up in Novato I was honored to reconnect with them last year with funding from the Bill Graham Foundation.

Comforting Companions
A lot of the calls we receive are from seniors who really don’t need a nurse, but could use a friend. A “friend” in terms of someone that can provide them with non-medical care and services.
At our agency, non-medical home care services are usually provided by companions, Certified Nurses Aides or Home Health Aides. These woman (and men) are wonderful.
They step in when an older client is recovering from an illness or surgery, but rather than provide nursing care, they provide just a little extra help during the recuperation period.
Most of the care or services are clients need, are similar to the things that we would do for one of our own friends. They often includes help with:
- Companionship
- Meal Preparation
- Light housework
- Transportation & errands
- and shopping
Because so many of our workers are CNA’s or HHA’s, they can further assist the client who needs help with:
- Bathing/Showering
- Ambulation
- Transfers
- Medication Management
- and dressing
